Lake Boren Park shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis unless reserved in advance. Reservations must be made 2 weeks in advance. These shelters are the only park facilities in the city's system that can be reserved.
The two picnic shelters can be reserved for morning block (8 am to 1:30 pm) or afternoon block (2:30 pm to 8 pm) or full day from (8 am to 8 pm) any day of the week. Any activity outside normal hours must be approved by the City Manager. Reservations can be made starting on the first day of the same calendar year, but no later than two weeks prior.
Reservation rates vary depending on City residency status, length of the reservation and day of reservation, and processing fees(credit card processing fee). View the most current rates in the fee schedule posted here. In order to receive the resident rate, the person completing the form and paying the fee must live within the corporate limits of the City of Newcastle and provide proof of residency (such as a driver's license or a utility bill). Some dates are unavailable due to City of Newcastle events. For example, park shelters may not be reserved on the Fourth of July due to the city's Fourth at the Lake Celebration.
Cancellations made two weeks or more before the event date, will be refunded 50 percent of rental fees. Cancellations made 14 days or less (and up to 2 days) prior to the event will be refunded 25 percent of rental fees. Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the start time of the reservation will not be refunded. Refunds will not be issued after the reservation date for any reason.
Power outlets are available at both shelters. Barbeque grills are not provided, but may be brought in. Barbeque coals should not be disposed of in the garbage but should be carried out. Shelter #1 is located near the playground, and Shelter #2 is found near the bathroom and tennis courts. Both shelters contain five standard-sized picnic tables.
Additional restrictions and information can be found on the Park Shelter Application Form.
