Jeff Brauns is Director of Public Works at City of Newcastle. The largest department in the city, his team oversees many of the places and spaces that make Newcastle special.
How long have you worked in Newcastle and what brought you to Newcastle?
I have worked for the City for almost ten years. I started on January 2, 2015. Prior to coming to Newcastle, I was the City Engineer at the City of Sammamish. The opportunity to advance to the Director role was the motivation to come to Newcastle.
What are some of the ways you contribute to our community?
Some ways are fairly noticeable, such as planning and overseeing the various capital improvement projects that expand facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, enhance parks and trails, and maintain the City’s infrastructure. Less obvious ways are collaborating with residents to address specific issues or concerns. These instances allow for closer one-to-one opportunities to make a difference and connect directly with residents.
Tell us a Newcastle memory.
In February 2020, a live power line came down onto Newcastle Way. The strong electric current caused the asphalt to melt. It was quite a scene! The Public Works crew jumped into action to repair the damaged pavement. It was an all-hands on deck situation with the common goal to restore the road to a safe condition and reopen it with minimal delays.
What do you hope for the future of Newcastle?
I would like to see the City retain its independence and strong sense of community. I hope to see the planned historic park in the Lee Baima development come to fruition and become the central place to honor and learn about Newcastle’s rich history. I would also like to see the momentum continue at Lake Boren Park by making further improvements from the adopted Master Plan.
What is your idea of a perfect weekend in Newcastle?
Starting off the day with breakfast at The Coleman. Then hike one of the many trail options in Cougar Mountain Wildland Park from the Red Town Trailhead.
What are some of your favorite Newcastle places to visit?
