Community members turned out once again to help keep reusable materials out of the landfill at the City’s Fall Recycling Collection Event, held earlier this season at Hazelwood Elementary School. Hosted in partnership with Olympic Environmental Resources (OER), the event offered the community a convenient way to responsibly dispose of a wide range of items.

A total of 277 vehicles participated, dropping off 30,737 pounds of recyclable material, equal to 15.4 tons and averaging about 111 pounds per car.

Community members brought a wide variety of items including:
♻️ 14,820 pounds of appliances, scrap metal, electronics, printers, and copiers
♻️ 96 televisions and 39 computer monitors
♻️2 refrigerators and freezers, properly processed for refrigerant removal
♻️ 6,640 pounds of confidential documents shredded on-site
♻️ 14 cubic yards of Styrofoam
♻️ 12 propane tanks
♻️ 27 used tires
♻️ 7 lead acid batteries and 2,740 household batteries
♻️ 6 mattresses and box springs
♻️ 4 toilets and sinks

These materials will be dismantled, sorted, and recycled through regional partners specializing in safe disposal and reuse. From tires turned into playground mats to porcelain reused in concrete, many items will take on a second life.

Olympic Environmental Resources reported a smooth event and praised Newcastle community members for their continued participation.

The City of Newcastle hosts recycling events twice a year (spring and fall) to promote sustainability and provide community members with accessible ways to reduce waste.
