City of Newcastle
City of Newcastle

No doubt you’ve driving through many areas of the City which reveal some sort of construction or development. The only thing constant is change. New homes and businesses mean Newcastle is growing and attracting new faces to our great community.

Interestingly, however, this same development means wildlife can be displaced from its native area. Animals such as raccoons, possums, skunks and coyotes included.

No matter where you are – open areas, roadways, even your own back yard, there are some things you can keep in mind:

1. Food lures coyotes and other wildlife into suburban yards. Never leave pet food or water outside. If you compost, be sure to enclose your bins and do not include fish or meat scraps.
2. Keep your trash binds and garbage securely covered – and lids weighted if necessary.
3. Pick up rotted, rotting or fallen fruits.
4. Protect your pets by attending them while outdoors – especially at night as coyotes and raccoons are nocturnal.
5. Should you see a coyote, yell at it or scream. Be assertive and make loud noises to move them along.

It’s important to remember that these animals play a large part in the balance of nature. They prevent the overrun of mice, gophers, squirrels and rabbits. By eliminating the reasons that attract wildlife (food, water and shelter) they will re-locate themselves and those they care for.
